That’s the advice I would give; get used to the New Zealand work environment.
No matter which country you’re from, programmers all speak the same language.
Coding is universal, so if you have experience in one part of the world and want to move to another part, then it’s the perfect job to bring with you!
Frank moved from China recently and brought some experience with him, but the problem wasn’t his ability, it was finding work in an English-speaking country.
It’s difficult enough to get an interview, but if you struggle with the language then it’s almost impossible to land a job.
Unless we help.
Frank joined Industry Connect and through our internship he secured an intermediate software developer job.
What would you suggest to people who are struggling in getting their first IT job?
For me, the first thing is about experience. I had no local, New Zealand experience, and that’s what Industry Connect gave me. The second thing was my English, even today it needs improvement!
That’s what Industry Connect gave me, a working environment with real experience of how I could work in New Zealand.
That’s the advice I would give; get used to the New Zealand work environment.
Industry Connect also gave me communications skills and help with the culture.
I think because people’s experience are different, some people don’t have software development skills. They should develop those skills through practice. Sometimes that practice is very simple, sometimes is just repeating other people’s code. It’s boring but it’s practice.
For some people who do have software development skills, I suggest you focus on your communication skills.
And most importantly – don’t give up!
Thank you to Frank and we wish him all the best in his new job!
Arriving in a new country is stressful. Not speaking the language is even harder. Trying to find your dream job is almost impossible!
Luckily we can help.
