What do you think employers are looking for?
From my personal experience, I’ve found that the local commercial experience is highly regarded here in New Zealand and without it employers will not look seriously at you.
So in order to get through to the interview stage, the local experience is something that you have to have and once you have it you will gain the technical skills, working in a team environment and have the soft skills as well. These are the things that employers are looking for.
Industry Connect helped me in these areas so that I was job ready for the IT Software Market.
What would you suggest to people that were struggling getting their first IT job?
Firstly it is the passion. If you can show someone that you are passionate about technology then you are through. Having a learners mindset also where you are always willing and ready to learn new skills, technologies and tools is an important attribute.
Secondly I would say, overcoming challenges because sometimes we get intimidated by the challenges but I say confront the challenges. What I personally do is embrace the fear when faced with a challenge and push through.

I definitely would recommend Industry Connect to people that are struggling to get a job or no prior experience in the market. If you don’t have the right skills right now, how are you going to gain the necessary skills to get you job ready for the IT Market.
