Congratulations Stella on your first job as a software developer! It hasn’t really taken that long either, after joining us. Tell us a little bit about you and your background before you came to Industry Connect.
I first arrived in New Zealand last year and I applied for lots of jobs, probably around 50. But I couldn’t get any positive feedback or even an invitation for interview. Somehow from my research I found that people who secured their first software developer job came here to Industry Connect. So I went to the website I saw a lot of the success case stories (like what I’m doing now) and so I decided to join, and now I’m the one making the video!
So how did Industry Connect help you to get to where you are today with this full-time position as a software developer?
I think the most integral point is Industry Connect helped me to gain the local experience get more involved in the projects which use the more common technologies which are in high demand in the market. I think that is the main reason I stood out from other candidates.
And it’s not only the technical part, but also the communication side of things. You can get to know the people here, they are really nice.
So if you had a friend, or when you just met someone and they’re in the IT field of study, they’ve just graduated, or come from overseas and they are finding it hard like you did getting their foot in the door of the IT market, what would you tell about Industry Connect?
I would definitely really recommend them to join Industry Connect. It did a great job with me in my case, because it helps to build confidence, from technical skills to communications. And the people here are very experienced developers. They have many years in the IT industry so they know what skills are essential for the position, and they guide us throughout every step of the process.
