The job market can be tough going at the best of times, but add to that you’re from another country and English is your second language, and landing an interview is tough never mind a job at the end of it. This was the problem for Allan who was finding it tough getting a job as a software developer after moving here from China.

Luckily he found Industry Connect, and now he’s just landed a job with our help. We caught up with him to asks him about his time with us and how we helped him find a job as a software developer.

Firstly congratulations on your first job as a software developer in New Zealand! Before coming to Industry Connect, how about you tell us a bit about your experience both in New Zealand and overseas in the IT job market?

Well, when I came to New Zealand I just had one year experience as a general developer. Then when I came here I graduated from Unitec with a postgraduate in computing but I was struggling to find a job in the IT industry in New Zealand. After about half a year looking for work, I came to Industry Connect

And while you were here at Industry Connect what kind of technical skills did you pick up along the way?

I learnt a lot from Industry Connect. I learnt C#, SQL server language, JavaScript and jQuery which is a kind of popular, developing language nowadays. In addition to the technical skills, I also learned communication skills – how to communicate with different people – so that’s why think it is more important than the technical skills.

And in terms of the project that you’re working on as a team, how about you tell us a bit more about that project you’re working on and how that helped you in terms of your communication skills.

The project? Actually, when I joined the team, the project was already set up, so I needed to cooperate with a lot of things from the initial design, and the implementation and the requirement analysis, so I had this opportunities to learn a lot of things and cover a lot of areas, so yeah, that’s pretty much my experience.

For someone who is in the same position as maybe you were a little while ago, so considering joining Industry Connect to improve their ability to gain a job, what would your recommendation to them be?

Yeah, you can just come and ask which plan is suitable for you and then if you decide to join Industry Connect you can learn the technical skills in the short term, and then go through the internship phase and that way you can get more experience.

Well thank you so much Allan and congratulations again on your new job as a software developer.
