“Employers are looking for people with local experience. The way to do it quickly is through Industry Connect.”
Another Industry Connect success story! This time it’s Anton who just landed a job as a test analyst. We caught up with him to ask about his time with Industry Connect and if he had any advice for others in the same boat.
Congratulations Anton on your new job as a test analyst! Tell us a bit about your background before joining Industry Connect.
Well I used to work in the software engineering industry back in the Philipines, working as a manual test analyst. Then I moved to New Zealand and completed a post-graduate diploma in IT, after which I looked for a job in IT, but couldn’t find any.
I ended up getting a job as an electronic technician, and then I got a job in a hospital working as a biomedical equipment technician in Auckland hospital.
So you knew manual testing, but then you joined out test analyst job-ready programme and learned test automation?
Yes, that’s why I couldn’t get a job here in New Zealand when I tried, because I didn’t know the automation part. I realised I didn’t have the skills and I had to upskill.
So how did you find us?
I realised I wanted to go back to my previous software engineering career because I just really enjoyed doing it, so I sat down and started brainstorming how to get back into the industry. I mentioned it to a friend and he told me he had joined Industry Connect and now has a job as a test analyst.
Then separately, two of my hiking buddies told me they had also went to your advice meetings. So all three of them recommended I join the test analyst program, so I looked at the website and realised that it was perfect for me! It was exactly what I needed to get back into software engineering.
So how did you find the 6-week program?
It was a lot of learning for me! It’s like with the test automation, I learned a lot. Learning to use all those tools like C#, Selenium, visual studio… all that stuff was really interesting. And my mentors, they worked in the industry, so they were very knowledgeable, and they clarified anything that we needed to clarify.
After the 6 weeks you moved to the internships with MVP Studio, how was that transition?
I found the 6-weeks training made the onboarding task easy. I had something to look at, something to reference, so I could build upon it.
What were some of the highlights for you?
For the most part it was the learning. Learning automation, the tools… one of the highlights was the Global Tech Chit Chat. It was interesting to see the mentors share their knowledge and see the tools and best practices that are needed in the industry as a test analyst.
What advice would you give someone who wants to be a test analyst?
Well I actually have friends who want to jump into the IT Industry, so I tell them you need to upskill and that employers are looking for people with local experience. These two things are the key. The way to do it quickly is through Industry Connect. If you want to do it efficiently, Industry Connect will help you.
Well thank you Anton and good luck in your new job as a test analyst!
