Charu Lamda is a great example – she secured a role as a test analyst in only 7 months after coming to us. That’s a fraction of what it takes to earn a degree!
Congratulations Charu on your new role as a test analyst! Tell us, what was your background before you joined Industry Connect?
I came to New Zealand in March 2020, just before lockdown, and once that was over I started applying for jobs because I had experience in manual testing. For some reason I couldn’t get back into it, but then through Facebook I came across an interview from Industry Connect, and that’s how I got to know about you guys. So I looked at the reviews and everything, and it was all positive, so I got in touch and that was that!
It has helped me a lot, in many ways, not just the local experience which I was looking for, it’s more than that, I got to learn automation testing which wasn’t what I wanted to learn. I found a roadmap through Industry Connect, how to go about my learning, and it’s helped me a lot.
There were a few hiccups of course, but for the most part it was very good. Kumar covered things in a simple way and then when I went into MVP Studio, it was a very different experience – you had to work on an application and apply what you’d learnt up until that point.
Which part did you like the most during your internship?
You normally only get the technical training, but here you improve your soft skills as well which is great. When I heard that, I was like “great!” because I needed to improve a lot on my soft skills side, so that was another thing that was very good. And it improved all kind of communication skills, giving you more scope to work on other skills as well.
What would you suggest to others?
I had this mindset “I’m still not ready for this job”, but I realised there’s no such time as correct time. When you start, that’s when you get the idea of what’s going on in the industry. An in my first interview, I was quite surprised to find that I was pretty good at it! I was quite good at answering the questions because there were some that you could only answer if you had worked on a project, so that helped as well.
So I would say face the interview, don’t hesitate, there is no right time, now is the time. I had another block in my mindset – I had a full decade out of the industry – so I thought I would never be able to get back into the industry and start my career again, but with the help of Industry Connect and MVP I did, and I’m really grateful, thank you so much.
