Another success story from Industry Connect! This time it’s Gio who has left us to start a new career. He has just landed a job as a SQL Bi developer, but before he headed off into the sunset, we sat down with him to ask him about his time with Industry Connect.
Firstly massive congratulations on the new role as a SQL Bi developer. Tell us, before coming to Industry Connect, what was your experience both internationally and then also how did you find the process of trying to apply for jobs when you came to New Zealand?
Before I came to New Zealand I was already working as a database administrator for three and a half years, but when I came here it was really hard to find a job that related to a database administrator. So I tried to leverage my application as a Support Analyst for SQL server and other Microsoft applications but I was really having a hard time looking for a job here, because I wasn’t really using much of the technologies that are being used here in New Zealand when I was working in the Philippines.
And in terms of those technologies then, I’m guessing when you were here at Industry Connect you picked up a lot of those technologies that are used here locally? Do you want to tell us about those?
Yeah, so like with most of the job listings that I found online, it was more of the Microsoft VI stack; it was SQL server, SSRS, SSIS, SAS and those Microsoft VI stack was what were taught here at Industry Connect. I was able to practice those technologies when I was here in the internship.
And how did you find it was working with a live team, a live project and a team environment? How do you think that helped you in terms of you going into a work environment and doing the same thing?
Yeah it was really helpful because with most of the interviewers they would want to know how you can relate your experience or your knowledge of different technology issues to a live project that you have, so having done that in the internship here in Industry Connect I was able to relate all my training that we had and how I was able to put them to work.
And then in terms of soft skills would you say there are any significant soft skills you picked up during the course of you being here at Industry Connect?
Yes there were a lot to be honest, but the ones that stood out were communication skills and just teamwork, like with when I was talking with my project manager, Hannah. The technical skills you can actually learn it at home but communication skills in you hone in here in Industry Connect.
For anyone who is in a similar position to you, just because of lack of local experience they weren’t able to land a job and they were considering doing something were they doing Industry Connect, what would your advice to them be?
I’d say go for industry connect and just really try to learn as much of the technology that they are teaching you and practice those when you come to the internship program.
Awesome well huge congratulations on your new position as a SQL BI Developer and we wish you all the best for the future.
