What is a back-end developer?

A back-end developer is all about the “server-side” of web applications. Server-side is the code and language that runs behind the scenes on the web server or the back-end.

The front-end is the client side, and front-end developers worry about the side that people online interact with. A back-end developer deals with the code that makes the website run in the first place. To do this, they use of server-side scripting languages like Python or Java.

Aside from making web applications functional, back-end developers are also responsible for optimizing the application for speed and efficiency. On top of that, back-end developers often create databases, which are a crucial component for all web applications.  Common databases include MySQL, MongoDB, and PostgreSQL.

Who works with the back-end developer?

Back-end developers typically work in groups or with a back-end team. However, within larger teams, there can be both back-end and front-end developers, which can include engineers, and UX architects.

On the back-end team, back-end developers work alongside software engineers each with a specific role like REST API development or quality assurance (QA). Even within the back-end, there are different roles and responsibilities.
